The European Medicines Agency’s (EMA’s) management board has nominated Professor Guido Rasi as the executive director of the agency. At an extraordinary session on October 1, 2015, the board selected Professor Rasi from a shortlist of candidates provided by the European Commission.
Professor Rasi has been invited to give a statement to the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety on October 13, 2015. The appointment of the new executive director will only be made after this session.
Professor Rasi had been executive director of EMA until late 2014 when a judgment by the European Union Civil Service Tribunal annulled his appointment as the agency’s executive director. In 2014, the European Union Civil Service Tribunal annulled the European Commission’s shortlist of potential candidates for the position of executive director and, as a consequence, also annulled the October 2011 decision by the EMA's management board to select Professor Rasi from the shortlist and appoint him as EMA executive director.
Following the annulment, Andreas Pott was appointed EMA's deputy executive director to be in charge of the management and operations of the agency until the new selection procedure suggested by the European Commission is finalized. Mr. Pott will continue to lead EMA operations and to legally represent the agency until the new executive director has officially taken up his duties.
